Career Expo

The second annual Career Development Expo on 24 July was a great opportunity for over 500 VCE students from four campuses to hear from professionals. Students attended 30 seminars and visited 30 stallholders in a short period, hearing from experts in various industries. They spoke about skills students need in order to succeed, explained what their own jobs were like and answered students’ questions.

We were proud to host as speakers some of our own graduates from the fields of media, biomedicine, law, construction, health sciences and engineering.

Thank you to our Year 9 student chaperones who assisted our speakers and guest students throughout the day.

Outdoor Education experiences make a positive difference to young people’s lives by:

Along with the opportunity to be involved in Outdoor Education is the ability to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s award is the world’s leading youth achievement award. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition against others; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievement.

To achieve each level, Participants create their own program of activities over a set length of time and across four Sections:

Four Award Sections

Service – To develop and encourage a sense of community spirit and responsibility to others

Skill – To encourage the development of personal interests and practical skills

Physical Recreation – To encourage participation in Physical Recreation and improvement in physical fitness and performance

Adventurous Journey – To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery Gold-level Award Participants also undertake a fifth Section:

Residential Project – To broaden experience through involvement with others in a residential setting

Participants choose activities that spark their interest in each Section, then set their own goals. Students have 3 months to complete all areas of the award

Completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award can lead to students gaining entry into LaTrobe University Aspire Program, and ACU early achievers program preference. More than 70 companies are currently on board and it is recognised for entry level recruitment and internships.

SRC NEWS

Environmental Awareness

In Term 2, the SRC initiated an ‘environmental awareness campaign’ designed to encourage their peers to be more environmentally friendly. When out in the yard, if a student is doing the right thing by picking up rubbish, she is awarded with a green token by the yard duty teacher. These tokens went into the draw to win a voucher. The more entries, the higher the chance of winning. The term 2 winner of this initiative was Sumaya Hashi from 7A. The competition will continue in Terms 3 & 4 with bigger prizes to come.

Another initiative designed to promote environmental awareness around the school has been designed by the Farming and Gardening elective. They are asking for used water bottles to repurpose in their farm and limit the amount of waste in landfill. SRC and the F&G girls are collecting water bottles. Alternatively, you can place your used water bottle in the bins outside the farm.

Pyjama Day

On Tuesday the 7th August, the SRC team and Pastoral Care team ran a Pyjama Day to raise funds for the Qurban Campaign. The amount of student involvement was overwhelming. Students arrived in their warmest pyjamas and most colourful onesies. They did a fantastic job in raising approximately $1200. They should be commended for their efforts.

All funds will go directly to the Qurban campaign and will help countless needy families.
